AN EXCERPT FROM A SHORT STORY I’M WORKING ON

In the Garden Where the Willow Trees Are

The old Octavio house was settled on a large, grand piece of land. The house itself was nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, many had called it below average, given the status of the Octavio family, but it was a beautiful home. Though it was a particularly small house - a slightly larger cottage, really - it had a pitched roof, large bay windows, a wraparound porch, and a small balcony on the second story. The house was a delicate yellow color and it was a pleasant sight in the spring and summer under late afternoon sunlight, soft breezes rustling the roses and lilacs in the garden that were Mrs. Octavio and Miss Octavio’s pride and joy.

Though it was considered a beautiful home many did not believe the house to be up caliber with the family - unlike the Octavio property, which was one of the most highly coveted lands in town. It was about twenty of the best acres in the county. Several of those acres were farmland - of course, that was purely for the “good” of the town, as Mr. Octavio loaned plots of land to farmers for a nice profit, naturally. The majority of the property was woodlands. Filled with vast chestnuts and maple trees it was the most envied lumber in town. Or at least it would have been had Mr. Octavio allowed anyone outside the family to so much as even step foot in the woods, let alone cut any of it down. These woods were the oldest part of the Octavio legacy and his personal prized possession.

The true crowning jewel of the entire Octavio land was not the roses and lilacs in the home garden, nor was it even the entirety of the old woods. It was a tiny lake settled at the very end of their acreage. It was a small body of glistening green water that was the worst-kept secret of the property. The lake was rumored to hold the best and biggest fish for towns. Of course, that could have been a rumor started by the family and was not particularly the reason why the lake was the jewel of the grand Octavio territory.

Surrounded by giant willow trees, there was also an air of mystery to the lake. It was said that the willows were home to fairies, woodland spirits, and other supernatural creatures. It was said that on nights when the moon was full the glow against the rippling waters lured the creatures out of the trees and you could see them playing and drinking out of the lake. It was said that if you listened closely you could hear them in the wind. The willow trees would rustle in the night breeze and you could hear the fairies and sprites laughing. Everyone knew this was a falsehood, after all, who believed in fairies and pixies anymore? But to own something as beautiful as the lake and the willow trees, that could enchant and bewitch the mind in order to make up such tales, that was the true motive that made the lake the most desired piece of the great family’s fortune.

So like we know part of the Big Change in Armando once he falls in love with Betty is that he no longer wants to have sex with Marcela, but let’s talk about the smaller ways he’s been distancing himself since he first started dating Betty. First off, I mentioned before that he doesn’t even enjoy spending time with Marcela anymore, he doesn’t even like her, but it’s deeper than that. He’s become more open and honest with Betty, giving her explanations about his whereabouts and nights with Marcela even when she says it’s not needed and she has no right to ask for one. Also, I’ve noticed that since he first kisses betty, he doesn’t even enjoy kissing Marcela anymore. He has this pained expression on his face like he’s doing something horrible. Without knowing from the start of their Relationship he’s switched the role of Betty and Marcela in his life
